Sandiganbayan suspends Senator JV Ejercito for 90 days

The Sandiganbayan ordered the suspension of Senator JV Ejercito from his duties as senator for 90 days in connection with the graft case he is facing regarding the anomalous purchase of firearms using calamity funds in 2008 during his time as mayor of San Juan.

“Accused Joseph Victor Ejercito is hereby suspended from his position as senator of the Republic of the Philippines, and from any other public office which he may now or hereafter be holding for a period of 90 days from receipt of this resolution, unless a motion for reconsideration is seasonably filed,” the order read.

In a report by GMA News, the Sandiganbayan did not side with Ejercito who argued that the suspension will interfere with his legislative work. The anti-graft court reasoned that despite he is the chair of the Senate committee on urban planning, housing, and resettlement, he has 23 colleagues that will champion his advocacies.

The anti-graft court’s Fifth Division approved the Ombudsman’s call to suspend Ejercito and his co-accused: city administrator Ranulfo Dacalos, treasurer Rosalinda Marasigan, Atty. Romualdo delos Santos, budget officer Lorenza Ching, and engineer Danilo Mercado.
