Nike terminates contract with Manny Pacquiao

American multinational corporation Nike released an official statement on Thursday (February 18, 2016) announcing that international boxing superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is no longer affiliated with the company after years of being a Nike ambassador.

Upon the release of Manny’s controversial and derogatory statement concerning the issue of same-sex marriage, Nike has decided to drop Manny as an ambassador of the multinational brand. As seen on the boxing champ’s interview snippet for TV5’s official election coverage ‘Bilang Pilipino,’ Manny expressed his stand on the issue by describing same-sex marriage as “mas masahol pa sa hayop.”

Through the official statement of Nike, the multinational company tagged Manny’s controversial statement as “abhorrent.” Nike also pondered that the company do not support any kind of discrimination,

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.”

Nike confirmed that they are no longer affiliated with the international boxing champ by stating, “We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

Prior to Nike’s decision to terminate their contract with the People’s Champ, various personalities from all over the globe already expressed their dismay and disappointment toward Manny and his statement, wherein he compared members of the LGBT community to animals.
