At least 37 dead, 54 injured in Resorts World Manila attack

Around midnight of Friday June 2, 2017, an unidentified gunman was found shooting and setting ablaze gaming tables in the casino area of Resorts World Manila.

According to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa, there was only one gunman involved in the incident. He described the man saying he was a foreign-looking Caucasian male, six feet tall, and has a white beard.

“Six-footer na foreigner-looking na tao, puti na may bigote,” he told reporters.

The PNP downplayed the possibility of the attack to be related to terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and instead looking at robbery as possible motive.

The police have recovered the suspect’s bag that was filled with casino chips. Amounting at Php 113 million worth of chips, as the suspect “ransacked (a) storage room of casino chips”.

According to National Capital Police Regional Office (NCRPO) Chief Superintendent Oscar Albayalde, at least 37 people were killed in the attack, including the gunman who according to Albayalde committed suicide, by shooting himself in the head.

“Our assessment is he burned himself. He committed suicide,” he said.
