Reports have claimed that as the shooting rampage was unfolding, Mateen made contact with 911 stating his allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State. In addition, United States President Barack Obama denounced the mass shooting as an act of terror and hate.
As such, law enforcement officials were probing evidence, which may suggest the involvement of the Islamic State militants. For now, officials saw no proof that Mateen had worked directly with the group. Note that Mateen is the son of immigrants from Afghanistan, and has been questioned twice by FBI agents in recent years, according to authorities.
