“We just upheld the rule of law” – MMDA Chairman on “Honor Thy Father” decision

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Emerson Carlos stood by and defended the MMFF executive committee’s decision to disqualify one of its official entry, “Honor Thy Father” in the Best Picture category following the film producers’ failure to compromise with the festival’s requirements.

Hours before the annual MMFF Awards Night, ABS-CBN News was able to get Carlos’ statement with regard to the controversial disqualification of “Honor Thy Father.”

The MMDA Chairman explained that the committee had nothing personal against the director, casts, producers, and staffs of “Honor Thy Father.” He also added that they were just abiding with the standard rules of the festival.

“We want want to make it pure as possible. We did not impose the sanctions against the talents, the stars, the director because we want to make the message clear na ipinapaabot namin ‘yung mensahe sa mga nagkamali mismo.”

Just recently, the side of Erik Matti and Ronald Monteverde released an official statement defending their stand, saying that “Honor Thy Father” did not generate any income from the Cinema One Originals special screening.

However, Carlos attested that the MMFF rule says, regardless of film’s financial income prior to the festival, an MMFF entry must solely be released and premiered during the festival.

“We understand na hindi income-generating. But the rule specifically states ‘income generating, commercial, or otherwise.’ So immaterial yun.”
