Senator Tito Sotto apologizes for his ‘na-ano lang’ remark

Senator Vicenta ‘Tito’ Sotto apologized to Social Welfare and Development Sec. Judy Taguiwalo and to everyone for his ‘na-ano lang’ statement. During Taguiwalo’s confirmation hearing, Sotto asked the Secretary about her status as a single mom. Taguiwalo confirmed that she is single and has two daughters.

Sotto then replied: “In the street language, when you have children and you are single, ang tawag lang ay na-ano lang. Thank you, you have my 100 percent support, Madam Secretary.” The remark did not escape various women’s group and the attention of netizens who demanded that Senator Sotto should issue an apology.

“Ang premise ko, sabi ko nga, in the street language, ‘di ba? Yun ang biruan sa kalsada. That’s why kung minasama nila, I’m sorry, I apologize. They don’t understand the joke,” said Srnator Sotto.

The senator added that disrespecting women is not his style and cup of tea for a number of reasons.
