Philippine fiesta inspired gown for MJ Lastimosa – Rajo Laurel

It has been a hot topic that our representative for the 63rd Miss Universe pageant, MJ Lastimosa, did not make it to the final round because of the gowns she wore during the competition, specifically her national costume which was designed by Colombian fashion designer Alfredo Barraza.

The outfit received a lot of criticisms; some compared the dress to a cake.

But, if renowned Filipino designer, Rajo Laurel, was given the opportunity to design the national costume for MJ, he said that he would take inspiration from our nation’s fiestas.

He then shared on his Instagram account what the dress would look like.

“What if I were to do our national costume for our candidate for the #MissUniverse? I would be inspired by our nations fiestas, like the Ati-Atihan, I would take it from there and modernize it. Perhaps it would look something like this” captioned Rajo with the photo.

Bb. Pilipinas Charities Incorporated chairperson Stella Marquez Araneta defended the outfit designed by Alfredo Barraza, but she said that she is open to using Filipino creations in the future.
