Game creator threatens to remove Josie Rizal from Tekken 7

Will the Negative reactions to Josie Rizal affect her inclusion in the game Tekken 7

Due to the harsh criticisms and negative reception, Tekken 7’s new character, Josie Rizal might not appear in the new installment of Tekken.

After it was announced on March 29 that Bandai Namco will add a Filipina inspired character into its roster of fighters in the upcoming Tekken 7, Josie Rizal, the Tekken character, received tumultuous amount of anger and bashing especially from the Filipino online community.

Most cite the alleged disrespect of the character’s attire, which is inspired by the Filipino flag – a golden dress, a blue skirt, gold earrings, red bunny headband, bracelets, and gladiator sandals- and the naming of the character, a name play of the Philippine national hero – Jose Rizal.

Now, creator Katsuiro Harada threatens to remove Josie Rizal altogether. According to his Twitter post, Josie will get the axe if the Philippine government has issues on Josie. ”If Josie can’t get supported in the Philippines, we give her up anytime. TEKKEN7 arcade board has a network update system. We can change plan and change characters anytime & quickly,” said Harada in his twitter account.

Primary creator of Josie Rizal, Mark Julio, who, incidentally is a Filipino decent, has not yet given any statements midst the criticism-throwing fracas online.
